GPS mandatory in public transport from August 1
The government has made it mandatory to install GPS devices in all public transport vehicles to ensure road safety by increasing the use of modern information technology. The directive will come into effect from August 1, according to a public notification issued by the Bangladesh Road Transport Authority (BRTA).
A notification to this effect was issued by the Road Transport and Highways Division on June 11. It stated that GPS devices must be installed in all public transport and must be kept operational at all times.
Technical specifications for GPS installation can be obtained directly from local BRTA offices or from the authority's website at www.brta.gov.bd.
According to the notification, registration and fitness certificate renewal for public transport will only be processed after ensuring GPS installation, in accordance with Section 25 of the Road Transport Act, 2018, and Rule 55 of the Road Transport Rules, 2022.
