Green chilli hits Tk 360 per kg; government allows imports

Green chilli prices in the capital's markets have soared to Tk 320 to Tk 360 per kg, compared to Tk 200 per kg just last week. Sellers attribute the price hike to reduced supply in wholesale markets due to continuous rainfall, waterlogging and floods affecting production in various parts of the country.

In response, the government has decided to reduce existing duties and allow the import of green chillies. Agriculture Minister Mohammad Amin Ur Rashid expressed hope that prices would return to a "tolerable level" within two to five days once imports begin.

Commerce Minister Khandaker Abdul Muktadir, Agriculture Minister Amin Ur Rashid and Food State Minister Md Abdul Bari visited the Shantinagar kitchen market in the capital on Sunday to assess the overall market situation, speaking with buyers and sellers.

The Agriculture Minister said, "We are reducing taxes on green chilli imports and have already permitted imports. The process will start from tomorrow (Monday). As a result, chilli prices will come down to a tolerable level within two to five days."

The Commerce Minister said the government will take all necessary measures to keep the market affordable for consumers. He also urged journalists to report market realities objectively to help raise public awareness and reduce misinformation.

Earlier, the ministers held a meeting at the commerce ministry to review the market situation of essential commodities. The ministry expressed hope that the government initiative would help stabilise supply and prices, bringing relief to consumers.
