Guardian hits teacher with sharp weapon, finger severed

The mother of a student has allegedly attacked a school teacher in Bhairab of Kishoreganj, seriously injuring her. The teacher suffered 10 stab wounds to the head in the attack. Her finger was severed as well.

The injured teacher Sinthi Simita, 28, is currently undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital.

The incident took place on Monday (July 13) morning in Panaullahrachar village of Shibpur union in Bhairab upazila. The accused woman, Priya Begum, 25, is the wife of Bayezid Mia, a food and hotel businessman in the same area.

Police said that Priya has been arrested in a case filed on charges of attempt to murder in the incident. She was sent to Kishoreganj jail by the court on Tuesday.

Locals said that the injured Sinthi is the daughter of the deceased Sulayman Mia of Bhuiyan bari in Shibpur union and the wife of Md. Murad Mia, an Italian expatriate from Panaullahchar area. She is a teacher at Shibpur BMA Kindergarten School. In addition to teaching, she tutors various students in the village. On Monday morning, as usual, teacher Sinthi went to Priya Begum's house to tutor her daughter Safa Moni, 4. At that time, the teacher asked Priya Begum for the outstanding private tuition fee of Tk 1,500. After finishing the private tuition, she went back to Priya's house to get the umbrella she had left behind. Then, the woman got angry and started beating the teacher with a stick. Later, hearing her screams, locals came and rescued her and first took her to the local Israt Jahan Specialized Hospital. Later, when her condition deteriorated, the doctor on duty sent her to Dhaka Medical College Hospital for better treatment.

After the incident, the locals captured the accused Priya Begum, called 999 and handed her over to the police.

Doctors said that the teacher had 10 stab wounds to her head and had to get 50 stitches. Seven of her fingers were damaged, one of which was severed.

The injured teacher's brother-in-law, Sarwar, said, "My sister-in-law teaches in a school. She also teaches a few students privately. Like every day, she went to teach Priya Begum's daughter. While returning home after teaching, Priya Begum suddenly slashed her with a knife, seriously injuring her. Later, we rescued her and took her to the hospital. When her condition deteriorated, the doctor sent her to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. Her condition is critical."

In this regard, Bhairab Police Station Sub-Inspector (SI) Emdadul Kabir said, SI Asibul went to the spot on receiving the information on 999 and arrested an accused woman and brought her to the police station. Later, she was arrested in an attempt to murder case and sent to jail through the court.
