Gunfight with 'drug peddlers' leaves 3 police injured

A gunfight broke out between police and drug peddlers during an anti-drug and anti-terrorism operation in Fatullah, Narayanganj, leaving three police personnel, including two sub-inspectors and a constable, injured. One drug peddler, Jasim Uddin, 24, was also shot. Police later arrested Jasim and Mohan Mia, 23, along with a foreign pistol and magazine.

The incident occurred around 3pm on Saturday in the Isdair railway station area of Fatullah.

The two arrestees are Jasim Uddin, son of Razzak Mia, and Mohan Mia, son of Abdus Salam, both from the Isdair area. Jasim was injured in the firing.

The injured police personnel are Fatullah Model Police Station Sub-Inspector Md Rafiq, SI Nandon Chandra Sarkar and Constable Rashidul. They were treated at Khanpur 250-bed Hospital in Narayanganj town.

According to police and local sources, police were conducting an operation in the Isdair area as part of an anti-drug and anti-terrorism drive. Around seven to eight drug peddlers and armed individuals, including Jasim and Mohan, opened fire on police.

In self-defence, SI Md Rafiq and SI Nandon Chandra Sarkar fired eight rounds in retaliation, injuring Jasim. Three police personnel were also injured in the exchange of fire.

Police later arrested Jasim and Mohan along with a foreign pistol and magazine. Jasim and the injured police personnel were sent to Khanpur Hospital in Narayanganj town.

Narayanganj Additional Superintendent of Police Tarek Al Mehedi said a group of seven to eight drug peddlers opened fire on police during an operation to arrest them. Police fired back in self-defence, injuring one. Three police personnel were also injured and hospitalised. Operations to arrest the other suspects are ongoing.
