'Gupto' wall writing sparks tension at DU's Bijoy 71 Hall
Tension has spread between activists of Chhatra Dal and Islami Chhatra Shibir at Dhaka University's Bijoy Ekattor Hall following a 'protest wall writing' programme by Chhatra Dal. The situation developed around 8:30 pm on Wednesday, April 22.
According to sources, Chhatra Dal activists went to write 'Gupto' on a wall in front of the hall's parliament room as a form of protest when a Shibir-affiliated leader and reading room editor of the hall parliament obstructed them. During an argument, he allegedly used foul language directed at a Chhatra Dal activist.
Chhatra Dal further alleged that the Shibir-affiliated leader also attempted to snatch a mobile phone from one of their activists. In protest, Chhatra Dal activists gathered and brought out a procession, chanting slogans including 'Education and terrorism do not go together', 'Terrorists have no place on this campus', and 'Gupto, gupto, Jamaat-Shibir's gupto'.
Meanwhile, Vice President of Bijoy 71 Hall Parliament, Hasanul Banna, in a personal Facebook post, urged students to remain vigilant. He wrote, "A group is destroying the internal beauty and discipline of Bijoy Ekattor Hall in the name of protest. I condemn this."
