Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) is working to arrest those involved in the attack on Sharif Osman Hadi, the prospective independent candidate for Dhaka-8 and spokesperson of Inquilab Mancha. The public has been requested to share any information regarding the attackers with the nearest police station or by calling 999.

The information was disclosed in a press release signed by Mohammad Talebur Rahman, deputy police commissioner of the DMP Media and Public Relations Department, on Friday, December 12, in the evening.

According to the statement, at around 2:30pm on Friday, several motorcycle-borne assailants fired shots targeting Osman Hadi in the Box Culvert area of Bijoynagar in the capital and fled. He sustained critical injuries and is currently undergoing treatment at Dhaka Medical College Hospital. The DMP has strongly condemned this heinous and cowardly attack.

It further stated that immediately after receiving the report, police visited the scene, collected and analysed CCTV footage from the surrounding area, and have been making sincere efforts to identify and arrest the perpetrators. Alongside the local police, the Detective Branch of DMP is searching suspected individuals and locations to apprehend the attackers.

The release added that, as seen in several recent sensational cases, DMP believes that the culprits behind this heinous incident will also be arrested soon.

The DMP urged city residents not to panic and requested that anyone with information about those involved contact the nearest police station or call 999.

The statement further mentioned that Dhaka Metropolitan Police is working sincerely to maintain law and order for a fair election and to ensure the safety of the city’s residents and their property.

Earlier in the afternoon, during election campaigning in the Box Culvert area of Bijoynagar, Sharif Osman Hadi, candidate for the Dhaka-8 constituency in the 13th national election and spokesperson of Inquilab Mancha, was shot.

He was later taken to the emergency department of Dhaka Medical College Hospital and, due to his critical condition, transferred to Evercare Hospital.
