Hanging body of woman UP member recovered in Naogaon

The hanging body of a woman Union Parishad (UP) member named Mosha. Alta Begum, 52, has been recovered in Mahadevpur of Naogaon. Her body was recovered from Khord Kalna Uttarpara village of the upazila on Friday afternoon.

Alta Begum was the reserved member of wards 7, 8 and 9 of Khajur Union Parishad. She was the daughter of late Sabij of Khord Kalna village.

According to family and local sources, Alta Begum contested the UP election in 2011 and was defeated. She also lost by a margin of only five votes in the 2016 election. Family members and locals informed that she had been suffering from mental problems since then. Later she was elected UP member by a huge margin of votes in the 2021 election.

Family members informed that mental problems appeared again after the death of her husband about two years ago.

According to family sources, Alta Begum was in the same room with her mother-in-law on Thursday night. When she was called on Friday morning, she said she was feeling unwell. Later she lay down again. At one stage family members found her in a hanging condition inside the room. While being quickly rescued and taken for treatment, she died in the charger van itself.

Chairman of Khajur Union Parishad Md Belal Uddin said Alta Begum used to remain depressed most of the time due to mental problems.

Officer-in-Charge of Mahadevpur police station Omar Faruk informed that getting the news police went to the spot and prepared the inquest report of the body. As there was no complaint from the family side, an unnatural death case has been filed at the police station. Later permission was given for burial of the body.
