Haor’s traditional Chauddo Madol Mela cancelled this year
Kishoreganj district administration has denied permission for the traditional Chouddo Madol Mela in the haor region in Austagram upazila, citing security considerations ahead of the upcoming national election.
The 96th edition of the four-day fair was scheduled to begin on Sunday (January 18). However, religious rituals, including kirtan, will go ahead in line with tradition.
Every year from the 4th day of the Bangla month of Magh, kirtan and Chouddo Madol Puja are observed for four days. The fair traditionally opens at the Bangalpara Union playground with the simultaneous performance of 14 khols, 14 pairs of kartals and other musical instruments. Kirtan is held at a temple locally known as the Nath Mondir.
The cancellation has disappointed local residents, who say that although the event is rooted in Hindu religious practices, it has long evolved into a cultural gathering for people of all communities, creating a festive atmosphere across the haor region.
Austagram Upazila Nirbahi Officer Silvia Snigdha said permission could not be granted due to overall security considerations ahead of the national election, though approval has been given for the religious kirtan programme.
District Commissioner Mohammad Aslam Mollah said the election is currently the top priority and that, in the interest of security, permission for the Choudod Madol fair could not be granted this year.
