HC dismisses writ petition, clears way for BCB election on June 7
The High Court has dismissed a writ petition challenging the legality of the election schedule and voter list for the Bangladesh Cricket Board election, clearing all legal obstacles to holding the polls as scheduled on June 7.
The bench of Justice Bhishmadev Chakrabortty and Justice Md Ashif Hasan passed the order on Wednesday, June 3, stating that the petition was "not pressed" or "not presented properly" before the court. BCB's lawyer Barrister Mahin M Rahman told The Daily Star that there is now no legal bar to holding the election on June 7.
The writ petition was filed on May 18 by six BCB councillors, including Armanul Islam Nayon, challenging a May 6 letter issued by the BCB Chief Executive Officer to presidents of various district sports associations (who are also deputy commissioners), asking them to nominate councillors for the BCB general council ahead of the 2026 board elections. The petitioners also sought a stay on the election schedule.
The other petitioners are Md Naim Hawlader, Md Enamul Ahsan, Md Abdullah Arko, Akib Javed and Md Rakibul Islam.
Advocate Mohammod Hossain and Advocate Azim Uddin Patwary appeared for the writ petitioners, while Attorney General Md Ruhul Quddus Kazal represented the state.
Under the election process, 23 directors will be elected directly by the councillors on June 7, while two more directors will be nominated by the National Sports Council. The 25-member board will subsequently elect the BCB president.
