The High Court has issued a rule asking why the family of Abul Kalam, who was killed after a metro rail bearing pad fell on him in Dhaka’s Farmgate area, should not be given Tk 2 crore as compensation.

A bench comprising of Justice Fahmida Quader and Justice Asif Hasan passed the order on Wednesday (October 29).

Barrister Abdullah Al Mamun and Advocate Tanvir Ahmed represented the writ petitioners in court.

The court also directed the formation of a special expert committee to investigate the overall safety and accident issues of the metro rail and to submit a report within 30 days.

Earlier, a writ was filed seeking a directive to form a committee to examine the quality of bearing pads used in the metro rail and all flyovers across the country. Another writ sought compensation for the victim’s family.

Abul Kalam, a resident of Isharapati village in Naria upazila of Shariatpur, was killed on October 26 around 12:30pm when a metro rail bearing pad fell off in the Farmgate area.
