HC seeks update on appointment of Information Commissioner
The High Court has directed the government to submit a report by November 2 outlining the steps taken to appoint a new Information Commissioner. The court also issued a rule questioning the delay in filling the position as mandated under the Right to Information Act.
The directive came from a bench comprising Justice Kazi Zinat Hoque and Justice Ainun Nahar Siddika during the hearing of a writ petition filed by journalist Arup Kumar Roy. The petitioner was represented by barristers Sarah Hossain, Nishat Mahmud, and Ruhi Naz.
The petition pointed out that the post of Information Commissioner has been vacant since September 5, 2024, leading to delays in the resolution of several pending complaints.
