Heatwave grips 33 districts, likely to ease from Wednesday
A severe heatwave is currently affecting over half of the country. As of Monday (June 9), 33 districts are experiencing heatwave conditions that began on Saturday. According to the Meteorological Department, the heatwave is likely to persist until Tuesday, but it may start to ease gradually from Wednesday.
Meteorologists stated that other parts of the country are also facing extreme heat. Although some areas have received rain, it hasn’t helped to reduce the temperature. The high humidity in the air is making the heat feel even more severe.
Meteorologist Kazi Jebunnesa of the Meteorological Department said, “All districts in Rajshahi, Rangpur, Mymensingh, and Khulna divisions are experiencing a heatwave today. Faridpur, Madaripur, and Patuakhali in Barishal division are also affected.” She added that a total of 33 districts are currently under a heatwave.
On Monday morning, the Storm Warning Center issued a five-day forecast, saying the monsoon is currently less active over Bangladesh and remains weak to moderate over the northern Bay of Bengal.
Given this situation, light to moderate rain or thunderstorms with gusty winds are likely in parts of Chattogram and a few areas in Dhaka, Barishal, and Sylhet divisions. The rest of the country may see partly cloudy skies and mostly dry weather.
The highest temperature today was recorded in Saidpur at 37.4°C. In Jashore, Chuadanga, and Koyra in Khulna, the temperature reached 37°C.
