Heatwave sweeps 16 districts as Rajshahi sizzles at 40°C
A heatwave is sweeping across at least 16 districts of the country, with the highest temperature of the season—40°C—recorded in Rajshahi on Thursday (April 23).
The Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) said temperatures continue to rise nationwide, intensifying discomfort in daily life. In Dhaka, the day’s maximum temperature was recorded at 36.5°C.
Meteorologists classify temperatures between 36°C and 37.9°C as a mild heatwave, currently affecting areas including Dhaka, Tangail, Faridpur, Madaripur, Bogura, Badalgachhi, Baghabari, Bandarban, Ramgati, Khulna, Jashore, Chuadanga, and Kumarkhali.
Moderate heatwave conditions (38°C to 39.9°C) are prevailing in Ishwardi, while Rajshahi is experiencing a severe heatwave with temperatures hitting 40°C.
The Met Office forecasts that parts of Mymensingh and Sylhet divisions may experience temporary gusty winds, lightning, and rain or thundershowers over the next 24 hours. Isolated hailstorms are also possible.
Elsewhere, the weather is expected to remain mainly dry with partly cloudy skies. Day temperatures are likely to remain nearly unchanged, while night temperatures may rise slightly, the forecast added.
