The country is likely to experience several days of widespread rainfall as conditions become increasingly favourable for the advancement of the southwest monsoon, the Bangladesh Meteorological Department (BMD) said on Saturday (June 6).

According to a forecast issued by meteorologist A K M Nazmul Hoque, the monsoon is expected to advance up to the Cox’s Bazar coast within the next 48 hours, bringing increased rainfall activity across the country. Moderate to very heavy downpours are also possible in some regions.

The weather office said that over the next 24 hours, many places in Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions are likely to experience light to moderate rain or thundershowers accompanied by gusty winds. Scattered rainfall is also expected in parts of Rangpur, Rajshahi, Dhaka and Mymensingh divisions.

Moderate to heavy rainfall may occur in several areas, while both daytime and nighttime temperatures are expected to decrease slightly across the country.

Rainfall activity is forecast to continue on Sunday (June 7), with most areas of Mymensingh, Dhaka, Barishal, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions expected to receive rain. Other parts of the country may also witness similar weather conditions, including moderate to heavy showers in some locations.

Although rainfall intensity may ease slightly on Monday (June 8), rain and thundershowers are still likely in various regions. Temperatures are expected to remain largely unchanged, with only minor fluctuations in some areas.

The BMD has forecast another increase in rainfall from Tuesday (June 9) and Wednesday (June 10). During this period, many areas in Mymensingh, Dhaka, Sylhet, Rangpur and Khulna divisions may experience thunderstorms accompanied by gusty winds.

Meteorologists have warned that parts of Sylhet and Mymensingh divisions could receive moderate to very heavy rainfall, raising concerns about localized flooding and waterlogging in low-lying areas.

The weather office also indicated that the prevailing rainy conditions are likely to persist beyond the next five days as monsoon activity gradually strengthens across Bangladesh.
