The Bangladesh Meteorological Department has issued a warning for potential waterlogging in Dhaka, Chattogram, and Khulna due to heavy to very heavy rainfall over the next 24 hours.

Additionally, there is a heightened risk of landslides in the hilly regions of Chattogram.

According to a forecast issued on Wednesday (July 9), Meteorologist Md Toriful Newaz Kabir said that the ongoing activity of the southwest monsoon could result in 44 to 88 millimeters—or more—of rainfall in parts of Dhaka, Chattogram, Khulna, and Barishal divisions by Thursday morning.

"Due to very heavy rainfall, there is a possibility of landslides in the hilly areas of Chattogram," Kabir said. "At the same time, temporary waterlogging may occur in urban areas of Dhaka, Chattogram, and Khulna."

In the past 24 hours until 6.00am, Wednesday, Dhaka recorded 77 mm of rainfall. Elsewhere, significantly higher amounts were recorded: Feni 399 mm, Barishal 269 mm, Patuakhali 201 mm, Sitakunda 180 mm, Sandwip 115 mm, and Chattogram 82 mm.

Another forecast warned of thunderstorms with gusty winds reaching 45–60 km/h in Khulna, Barishal, Patuakhali, Noakhali, Chattogram, and Cox’s Bazar. River ports in these regions have been asked to hoist warning signal number 1.

Authorities have urged residents in vulnerable and hilly areas to remain alert and avoid unnecessary travel. Emergency services are on standby to respond to any weather-related incidents.

The public is advised to stay updated with official weather bulletins as conditions may worsen.
