The Bangladesh Meteorological Department has forecast moderate to very heavy rainfall in five divisions, including Dhaka, over the next 24 hours due to active monsoon conditions.

Continuous rain since early Wednesday (April 29) has brought relief from recent heat but caused significant disruption to daily life in the রাজধানী. Morning commuters, students and workers faced severe difficulties such as waterlogging and traffic congestion and slowed movement across key roads.

Many residents were caught unprepared, with heavy downpours forcing people to take shelter along streets and in nearby buildings. Even those with umbrellas struggled as intense rainfall soaked clothing and footwear.

Meteorologist AKM Nazmul Haque said the current weather pattern may persist for several more days. Most areas of Mymensingh, Khulna, Barishal, Chattogram and Sylhet divisions are likely to experience light to moderate rain or thundershowers with gusty winds, while parts of Rangpur and Rajshahi may also see rainfall.

Isolated places in Dhaka, Mymensingh, Barishal, Chattogram and Sylhet could receive very heavy rainfall. Temperatures across the country are expected to drop slightly.

From Wednesday evening, very heavy rainfall is likely to continue in Mymensingh, Chattogram and Sylhet, while Dhaka, Rajshahi and Rangpur may see reduced intensity but continued chances of thunderstorms.

The rain may spread further into central and southern regions by Thursday and Friday, with heavy rainfall expected in Dhaka, Barishal and Chattogram on May 1. Similar conditions may persist until Saturday.

Authorities have warned of heightened lightning risks and advised people to remain cautious and stay in safe shelters.

Rainfall is expected to gradually decrease after the next five days, with temperatures likely to rise again across the country.
