Heavy rain triggers flood, landslide risks in Khagrachari
Continuous heavy rainfall since Thursday evening (May 29) has raised fears of landslides and flooding in Khagrachari, as water levels in local rivers continue to rise.
Authorities warn that low-lying areas may soon face flooding if the rain persists.
Khagrachari Deputy Commissioner ABM Iftekharul Islam Khandaker has urged residents living on hilltops, hillsides, and at the base of hills to remain alert and take shelter in safer locations.
He advised locals to stay in designated shelters until the weather situation improves.
Approximately 100,000 people across the district’s nine upazilas are at risk of landslides. Although the administration issues regular warnings during the monsoon season, residents and observers have raised concerns about the lack of long-term preventive measures once the rains subside.
