Helpless mother hands over two drug-addicted sons to police in Brahmanbaria

A helpless mother in Nasirnagar, Brahmanbaria, handed over her two drug-addicted sons to police after being unable to tolerate their abuse.

On Sunday (August 2) afternoon, Nasirnagar Upazila Executive Officer and Executive Magistrate Shahina Nasrin conducted a mobile court and sentenced Dulal Mia (45) and Moti Mia (26) to six months' imprisonment for drug abuse.

The convicts are sons of late Ajdu Mia of Dharamandal village under Dharamandal Union in the upazila.

According to police and local sources, the mother, Parveen Akhter, had been suffering for years as her sons became addicted to drugs. They engaged in criminal activities to fund their addiction. Despite repeated efforts, the mother failed to bring them back to normal life. Recently, the brothers became more reckless and frequently beat her and created turmoil at home.

On Sunday morning, the two demanded money from their mother for drugs. When she refused, they vandalised furniture and threatened to kill her. Helpless, she caught them with neighbours' help and handed them over to police. Later, UNO Shahina Nasrin conducted the mobile court and sentenced both to imprisonment.

Earlier on Friday, another father, Barju Mia, had handed over his drug-addicted son in Atokura village under Fandauk Union due to similar abuse. The mobile court sentenced him to eight months of simple imprisonment.

Nasirnagar Police Station OC Shahinul Islam confirmed the incident and said legal action has been taken against the two brothers under the law.
