High-Value mobile banking transactions suspended from February 8–13
Ahead of the upcoming elections, high-value transactions through mobile banking services—including bKash, Nagad, and Rocket—will be restricted from 8 to 13 February. During this period, customers will be able to send a maximum of BDT 10,000 per day, with each transaction capped at BDT 1,000, effectively halting large transfers.
At the same time, person-to-person transfers via internet banking will also be temporarily suspended. This restriction may be enforced through banking apps such as BRAC Bank’s Aastha, City Bank’s CityTouch, and Dutch-Bangla Bank’s Nexus Pay.
Sources from Bangladesh Bank and the Bangladesh Financial Intelligence Unit (BFIU) say the move comes at the request of the Election Commission. Strict monitoring of cash withdrawals and deposits has already begun. Any single account conducting transactions of BDT 1,000,000 or more in a day must be reported to the BFIU. Banks found with discrepancies in reporting could face penalties.
A Bangladesh Bank spokesperson said a formal notification will be issued soon in line with the Election Commission’s request. The limits on transactions may be adjusted up or down depending on the situation.
