Bangladesh is observing April 10 as Mujibnagar Government Formation Day, marking a defining moment in the nation’s independence struggle when the country’s first provisional government was formally formed in 1971.

On this day, the provisional government of Bangladesh was declared with Bangabandhu Sheikh Mujibur Rahman as the President, laying the political foundation for the Liberation War.

The leadership structure was formed to coordinate and direct the nine-month armed struggle that ultimately led to Bangladesh’s independence.

Syed Nazrul Islam took oath as Acting President, while Tajuddin Ahmad was appointed Prime Minister and Defence Minister. M Mansur Ali and AHM Qamaruzzaman were also sworn in as members of the cabinet.

A week later, on April 17, the government formally took oath at Baidyanathtala in Meherpur—then under Kushtia district—later renamed Mujibnagar, which was declared the symbolic capital of the provisional government.

The Mujibnagar leadership played a crucial role in organising the Liberation War, conducting diplomatic efforts abroad, and mobilising global support for Bangladesh’s independence.

The war ended on December 16, 1971, when Bangladesh achieved victory after a nine-month conflict, a sacrifice marked by the loss of millions of lives.

The day is being observed nationwide with various programmes including flag hoisting, discussions, and cultural events, highlighting the significance of the provisional government in shaping the country’s independence history.
