Historic trade deal with US marks diplomatic victory: Yunus
Bangladesh has achieved a significant diplomatic milestone with the signing of a historic trade agreement with the United States, according to Chief Adviser Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus.
In a statement issued Friday morning, Dr Yunus congratulated the country’s tariff negotiation team for their exceptional efforts in securing the agreement, describing it as an important diplomatic victory for Bangladesh.
He highlighted that the negotiation team demonstrated remarkable strategic skill and unwavering dedication to safeguarding Bangladesh’s economic interests and development. By successfully reducing the tariff rate to 20%, 17 points lower than anticipated—the team achieved a favorable outcome.
“Since February, the team has worked tirelessly, navigating complex discussions involving tariffs, non-tariff barriers, and national security issues,” Dr. Yunus said. “The agreement preserves Bangladesh’s competitive advantages, enhances access to the world’s largest consumer market, and protects our core national interests.”
The Chief Adviser added that this achievement not only underscores Bangladesh’s rising global stature but also paves the way for faster economic growth and sustainable prosperity. “Bangladesh’s future is undeniably bright. Today’s success is a testament to our nation’s resilience and a bold vision for a stronger economic future,” he concluded.
