Holy Ashura being observed today
To force Imam Hussain (RA) and his family to surrender, Yazid’s forces cut off access to water in the plains of Karbala. Despite the intense thirst suffered by the women and children in his caravan for several days, Imam Hussain never bowed to injustice. Finally, on the 10th of Muharram—Ashura—he and his 72 companions embraced martyrdom in a one-sided battle while under siege. A soldier named Shimr ibn Dhil-Jawshan brutally beheaded Imam Hussain, marking one of the most tragic chapters in Islamic history.
This heartbreaking event remains deeply etched in the hearts of Muslims and is especially mourned by Shia Muslims, who observe Ashura as a day of mourning. On this day, symbolic Tazia processions are held across the country, including in the capital, Dhaka.
Beyond its historical significance, Ashura also holds deep spiritual meaning in Islam. According to Hadith, the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) used to fast on this day and encouraged his companions to do the same. Many Islamic scholars also believe that the Day of Judgment will occur on Ashura.
On the occasion of this holy day, Chief Advisor Professor Dr. Muhammad Yunus issued a message saying that the lessons of Ashura inspire humanity to remain steadfast in the pursuit of truth and justice. He also expressed hopes for the establishment of equality, justice, and peace in society, and called for unity, solidarity, and continued progress for the Muslim Ummah.
