Eid-e-Milad-un-Nabi being observed today

Muslims across the country are observing Eid-e-Milad-un-Nabi today (August 26), marking the birth anniversary of Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) with prayers, Quran recitations, Milad gatherings and religious discussions.

The day falls on 12 Rabi' al-Awwal, traditionally regarded as the birth date of the Prophet in 570 AD in Makkah.

Muslims also commemorate his passing on the same date. During his 23-year prophetic mission, the Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) preached peace, justice, truth, compassion and equality and established a model community in Madinah.

Religious programmes are being held across the country, including Milad and Sirat discussions, prayer gatherings and processions. In Dhaka, major roads have been decorated with Islamic and national flags to mark the occasion.

The day is being observed as a public holiday, while newspapers have suspended their regular print editions.

The Islamic Foundation has launched a 15-day programme at Baitul Mukarram National Mosque featuring religious discussions and other activities. Various political, social and religious organisations have also arranged prayer gatherings, Sirat discussions and Jashne Julus processions.

In messages marking the occasion, the president and prime minister called on people to follow the Prophet’s teachings of peace, justice, tolerance, compassion and humanity, and to work toward a society based on harmony, equality and justice.

Many devotees are observing voluntary fasting and prayers and organising Quran recitations and Milad gatherings in honour of the Prophet (PBUH).
