A hotel manager named Md. Abdus Samad, 70, died after a wall of a godown collapsed in the Debidwar and Chandina border area of Comilla district.

The accident occurred in the area adjacent to Bagur Bus Station on the Dhaka-Chittagong Highway around 8am on Thursday (April 2). Fire Service Officer Imam Hossain Patwari confirmed the matter.

The deceased Abdus Samad was a resident of Gunaigar Union in Debidwar Upazila and was the manager of the local Sainik Hotel and Restaurant.

According to local sources, tin had been kept against the wall of a tin godown located next to the hotel for a long time. This created additional pressure on the wall and weakened it. At one stage, the wall collapsed and fell inside the hotel. As a result, a part of the building was destroyed and Abdus Samad was crushed under the wall, dying on the spot.

No other casualties were reported as other employees and customers who were in the hotel at the time of the incident were able to quickly get out. Later, a unit of the fire service arrived and conducted the rescue operation.

Officer-in-charge of Chandina Police Station Atiqul Islam said that if a written complaint is received in this regard, necessary legal action will be taken after investigating the incident.

The fire service said that an investigation will be conducted to find out the exact cause of the accident.
