Housewife arrested in Sirajganj over NGO loan default
A housewife has been arrested in Sirajganj’s Tarash upazila over failure to repay instalments of a microcredit loan taken from an NGO.
The woman, Mosha. Jannati Khatun, 25, was detained on Thursday afternoon (April 30) from her residence in Nadosaidepur Patgari Para under Magura Binod union. She is currently in police custody along with her one-and-a-half-year-old child.
Md. Habibur Rahman, officer-in-charge (OC) of Tarash Police Station, confirmed the arrest, stating it was carried out based on a court-issued warrant.
Further legal proceedings are underway, he added.
According to local sources, Jannati’s husband, Abdur Razzak, had previously worked as a field supervisor for Thengamara Mohila Sabuj Sangha (TMSS). During his employment, he deposited Tk 24,800 as security and also took a Tk 50,000 loan in his wife’s name from a branch in Gurudaspur, Natore.
Family members claim that nearly Tk 25,000 of the loan had already been repaid. However, a dispute over the remaining instalments led to a case being filed, ultimately resulting in the issuance of an arrest warrant against Jannati.
Razzak alleged that he had requested the NGO authorities to adjust the deposited security amount against the outstanding loan, but the request was denied. P
olice said Jannati will be produced before the Sirajganj court as part of the legal process.
