Housewife beaten to death with shovel in Barguna

A housewife was brutally beaten to death with a shovel in Barguna Sadar Upazila on Friday evening (March 6).

The victim, Alamtaz, 44, wife of Abul Hawlader and a mother of three, was attacked at her home in the Agapadma Dil Mahmud area under Noltona Union of the upazila.

Police said the assailants entered the house while she was alone and repeatedly struck her with a shovel, leaving her face severely disfigured and inflicting critical head injuries. Officers recovered the shovel believed to have been used in the killing from the scene.

According to police and local sources, bloodstains were found at the spot, but gold ornaments and cash kept in the house remained untouched, leaving the motive behind the killing unclear.

Local resident Nayem Hossain Tanvir said he rushed to the house after receiving the news following iftar and saw the victim’s body lying on the veranda. He said the family was financially well-off and had no known disputes with anyone in the area.

Another neighbour, Champa, said residents initially rushed to the house after hearing that a fire had broken out, but later found the body of the woman lying on the veranda with severe injuries to her face.

Noltona Union Parishad Chairman Shafiquzzaman Mahfuz described the incident as a brutal murder and called for a swift investigation to bring those responsible to justice.

Additional Superintendent of Police of Barguna Sadar Circle, Md Salahuddin, said police visited the scene soon after receiving the information. The body was sent to Barguna General Hospital morgue for autopsy, and a blunt iron weapon used in the attack has been seized. Police are working to identify and arrest those involved, he added.
