Housewife killed during robbery in Chandpur, another woman injured

A housewife was killed and another woman injured when robbers broke into a house through a window in the dead of night in Shahrasti upazila, Chandpur. The robbers also looted gold ornaments and valuables.

The incident occurred around 2:30 am on Tuesday, July 14, at the Bepari house in Battala village, Ward 9 of Shahrasti municipality.

The deceased, Regan Akhter Mim, 26, was the daughter-in-law of the late Selim Bepari and mother of two children. Her husband Roni was in Dhaka due to his work at the time of the incident. The injured, Kazi Sumaiya Akhter, 24, is another housewife of the same household.

According to Sumaiya, two masked men entered her room at night by breaking the window and held her and her three-month-old child at knifepoint. After learning the location of the gold ornaments, they tied her hands with her scarf and struck her on the head with a hammer, looting earrings, rings and other gold items. She heard screams from the adjacent room but could not help due to being tied up.

Family members said the main gate was locked at night. After hearing the screams, they came outside to find the lock removed and placed outside, with the gate bolted from inside. Neighbours surrounded the house after announcements from the mosque's loudspeaker. They later found an open window on the east side and entered the house to find Regan Akhter Mim lying on the floor with a scarf wrapped around her neck. A local doctor pronounced her dead. The injured Sumaiya was rescued with her hands tied.

Shahrasti Police Station OC Mir Mahbubur Rahman said the incident is being investigated with importance. Police are looking into whether it was just a robbery or if there is any other motive behind it.

Senior Assistant Superintendent of Police Md Abdul Hai Chowdhury of the Kachua Circle said multiple police teams are working to uncover the mystery of the incident, and significant progress is expected in the investigation.
