Housewife's body found on bed

Police have recovered the body of a 22-year-old housewife named Munni Akter in Mohonganj upazila of Netrokona. Her husband and members of her in-laws' family are absconding following the incident.

The deceased's family alleges that Munni was systematically murdered and then left hanging in a staged manner.

The body was recovered around 2:30am from Koyrapara village under the upazila's Samaj-Sahildeo union on Monday night (August 10). On Tuesday morning, the body was sent to the Netrokona Sadar Hospital morgue for an autopsy.

Sub-Inspector (SI) Jasim Uddin of Mohonganj Police Station confirmed the matter.

The deceased Munni Akter was the wife of Sohag Mia of Koyrapara village and the daughter of Idris Ali of Sonarampur village under Barokashia-Birampur union. They were married through an arranged marriage about three years ago, and they do not have any children.

According to police and local sources, Munni is believed to have died in her husband's room around 10pm on Monday. Afterward, her husband and other family members left the house after placing her body on the bed. Upon receiving information late at night, the police arrived and recovered Munni's body laid out on the bed.

Munni's cousin, Md. Mithu, stated that around 10:30pm, people from Sohag's family called to say that Munni had hanged herself and might have died. When they rushed to the scene, they found Munni's body lying on a bed in a room. At that time, her husband, father-in-law, mother-in-law, and other family members had fled the house taking their cattle and goats with them.

Mithu alleged that Munni was killed and initially hanged, after which water was poured on her head in an attempt to misrepresent the incident. He mentioned that a murder case will be filed against Sohag and his family members, and a formal complaint will be lodged at the police station after the burial of the body.

SI Jasim Uddin said that upon receiving the information, police went to the scene around 2:30am and recovered Munni's body. There are ligature marks on her neck, though no other injury marks were found on her body. No one from the husband's family was found at the scene as they are currently in hiding.

He added that locals suspect the incident occurred between 10pm and 11pm, and it is understood that family members had taken the body down from a hanging position and poured water on her head. However, the exact cause of Munni's death remains unconfirmed, and the true cause will be determined following the autopsy report.

Police stated that no written complaint has been lodged by the victim's family yet. The Officer-in-Charge (OC) of Mohonganj Police Station is attending a meeting at the district headquarters and legal action will be taken upon his return to the station.
