A Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) examinee reportedly took her own life in Mymensingh just hours before examination began across Bangladesh on Thursday (July 2).

The deceased, Tisha Sarker, 18, was an HSC candidate from Mintu College in Mymensingh. She was the daughter of Uttam Sarker and Moni Sarker of Tarakanda Upazila.

According to deceased's family, Trisha had been living in a female students' hostel in the city's Kachijhuli Mosque Road area for the past two years while preparing for her examinations.

According to police and local sources, the incident took palce around 6:00am, nearly four hours before the nationwide examinations commenced at 10:00am. She was found critically injured and rushed to Mymensingh Medical College Hospital, where doctors declared her dead.

Police said no immediate information was available regarding the events leading up to the incident, as other hostel residents were asleep at the time.

Officers from Kotwali Model Police Station visited the scene, prepared an inquest report and sent the body to the hospital morgue for an autopsy.

Confirming the incident, Additional Superintendent of Police (Crime and Operations) Ashraful Karim said preliminary findings suggest it was a case of suicide. However, investigators are examining whether examination-related stress, personal issues or any other factors may have contributed to the death.

"Legal proceedings are underway and the investigation is continuing," he added.
