An HSC student named Nusrat Jahan Nasrin (18) reportedly died by suicide after failing in one subject in the Higher Secondary Certificate (HSC) examination in Barishal.

Preliminary reports suggest that she took her own life by hanging. Her body has been sent to the morgue of Sher-e-Bangla Medical College Hospital in Barishal for autopsy.

Nusrat, daughter of Bashir Mridha from Amtali in Barguna, had been living in a rented house in Barishal city with her elder sister Rahat Anwar.

Confirming the incident, Dr Ashish Kumar Saha of the hospital’s emergency department said, “Nusrat was brought to the hospital unconscious around 12:00pm on October 16 (Thursday), and doctors declared her dead upon arrival.”

Professor Md Yunus Ali Siddiqui, Chairman of the Barishal Education Board, described the incident as extremely tragic. “Nusrat had performed quite well overall, but she failed in Health Science. She could have applied for a re-evaluation of her results. It is truly heartbreaking that she took such a drastic step,” he said.
