Human chain on SAU campus against VC
Teachers, students, officers and employees have formed a human chain on the campus of Sylhet Agricultural University (SAU) protesting against allegations of irregularities and corruption against Vice-Chancellor Dr Alimul Islam.
The human chain programme was organised on Monday afternoon, February 16, at the university's TSC premises on the initiative of BNP-leaning teachers.
Teachers participating in the human chain alleged that appointments have been made arbitrarily at various times since the VC assumed office, which contravenes the UGC's uniform recruitment policy. They said although complaints were lodged multiple times earlier, no satisfactory response was received from the VC, who was appointed during the interim government's tenure.
Speakers at the human chain demanded a legal investigation into the allegations of irregularities and corruption against the Vice-Chancellor.
It is noteworthy that on Sunday afternoon, February 15, a physical altercation occurred between pro-VC teachers and white panel teachers over teacher recruitment and administrative irregularities. Several teachers were injured in the incident.
Monday's human chain was primarily organised to protest the incident in which Professor Dr Mozammel Huq of the Department of Agronomy and Haor Agriculture was injured.
Meanwhile, VC Dr Alimul Islam denied the allegations of irregularities and corruption in recruitment, claiming there is no scope for compromise on quality in appointments. He also asserted that the white panel's allegations are not correct.
He further stated that appointments are made based on the recruitment board's policy and the recommendations of the concerned departmental heads.
