Hundreds of families trapped in water in Khagrachari
Khagrachari Municipality and Sadar upazila have been inundated by floods caused by heavy rains and landslides. The waters of Chengi and Maini rivers are flowing over the boundary.
Thousands of families in Muslimpara, Shantinagar, Bangalkati, Khabangpura, Rajyamanipara, Futbil, Battali and other areas of the municipal area have become waterlogged due to overflowing of Chengi river.
The city's municipal bus terminal, lower market and surrounding areas were submerged in water. Traffic is being disrupted due to water flowing through Khagrachari-Chattogram main road.
Besides, in some villages including Kamalchari of Sadar upazila and Ganjpara of Golabari union, about 300 houses have been flooded. People have been trapped inside houses due to waist and neck-deep water on the road.
Mayor of Khagrachari Municipality Nirmlendu Chowdhury said six to seven thousand families of the municipal area have been affected by the flood. Some 25 shelters have been opened for them. The municipality is providing food for everyone who takes shelter.
Khagrachari District Commissioner Md Sahiduzzaman said that shelter centres have been opened for those living in danger and in the mountains. The district administration is ready to deal with any kind of situation.
