Hundreds of skins thrown into river after failing to sell in Feni
Local seasonal traders in Feni's Daganbhuiyan Upazila are in dire straits after buying sacrificial animal skins. Far from finding a suitable price, two seasonal traders have thrown more than a hundred cow skins into the river as they could not find any wholesale buyers or traders to buy the skins.
The skins were thrown into the Katakhali River in Momarijpur village on Friday afternoon (May 29). Meanwhile, local residents are concerned about the pollution of the river and the surrounding environment due to the large amount of skins being thrown into the river. The two affected seasonal traders are Khurshid Alam and Didarul Alam of Momarijpur village in Daganbhuiyan Upazila.
According to local sources, Khurshid and Didarul of Momarijpur village had collected more than a hundred cow skins from different local areas in cash in the hope of earning extra income during Eid-ul-Azha. They hoped to make some profit by selling them to wholesale skin traders. But they have not seen any buyers since buying the skins.
The victim, seasonal trader Khurshid Alam, expressed his anger and said, "I bought the skins with cash. I stayed up all night to sell them, but no buyer came. It is extremely hot, and the skins have started to rot due to not being able to add salt on time. The phones of those I tried to contact are also switched off. Finding no other way, I was forced to throw the skins into the Katakhali river on Friday."
When asked about this, Daganbhuiyan Upazila Nirbahi Officer (UNO) Shahidul Islam said, "The viral video of throwing the skins into the river has come to our attention. If they could not sell the skins, they would have informed us or informed the local union council. But instead of doing so, they threw them into the river. We are investigating the matter. Moreover, they have been called to my office in the evening for questioning in this regard."
