Husband among seven arrested over bride gang-raped in Gaibandha

A newlywed woman was gang-raped on her wedding night in Saghata Upazila of Gaibandha district.

Police have arrested seven individuals, including her husband, Asif Mia, in connection with the crime.

The victim, a resident of Gobindaganj Upazila, was married to Asif Mia, son of Ashadul Islam from Osmanerpara village, during a family ceremony on Wednesday.

The assault took place at the groom’s residence on Thursday night (August 28).

On Friday afternoon, the woman was brought to Gobindaganj Upazila Health Complex in a deteriorating condition. Resident Medical Officer Dr. Fahad Al Asad confirmed that medical examinations showed signs of rape and physical assault. She was later transferred to Rangpur Medical College and Hospital for advanced care.

Gobindaganj Police Station Officer-in-Charge Md. Bulbul Islam confirmed the arrests on Saturday night, stating that all seven suspects, including the husband, were detained from the bride’s native village and handed over to Saghata Police Station for legal proceedings.

"An investigation into the matter is underway," he added.
