Husband, mother-in-law detained for questioning over housewife's death in Ukhiya

A husband and mother-in-law have been taken into police custody after a housewife's mysterious death in Ukhiya upazila of Cox's Bazar.

They have been detained for questioning as part of an ongoing investigation, police said.

The deceased housewife, Parvin Akter, 28, was a resident of the Paglir Bill area under Haldiapalong Union.

According to police and local sources, an argument broke out between Parvin and her husband, Md. Abdul Alom, on Thursday morning (June 4) over her intention to visit her parental home. The dispute reportedly escalated, leaving Parvin critically injured.

Family members rushed her to Ukhiya Upazila Health Complex, where on-duty physicians declared her dead upon arrival.

Following the incident, a team from Ukhiya Police Station visited the hospital, prepared an inquest report and launched an investigation into the circumstances surrounding the death.

Subsequently, police have taken Parvin’s husband, Abdul Alom, and her mother-in-law, Mariam Begum, into custody for questioning.

Mujibur Rahman, officer-in-charge (OC) of Ukhiya Police Station, said, "The two were detained on suspicion of possible involvement in the incident. However, no formal complaint had been filed as of Thursday afternoon."

The OC added that Parvin’s body has been sent to the Cox’s Bazar Sadar Hospital morgue for an autopsy. Further legal action will be taken based on the post-mortem findings and the outcome of the investigation.
