Husband sentenced to death for killing his wife over dowry demands
Judge Munshi Mashiur Rahman of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Tribunal-4 passed the order On Sunday (April 26) after the court found Syed Ahmed guilty of beating and strangling his wife, Rehana Begum, to death in 2012.
The court also imposed a fine of Tk 2 lakh, in default of which the amount will be recovered from the convict’s assets for the victim’s family, according to the prosecution.
The tribunal noted that the charges of dowry-related murder were proven beyond doubt based on witness testimonies and forensic findings.
According to the case details, Rehana Begum married Syed Ahmed in 2010. She was subjected to physical and mental torture over dowry demands. On June 29, 2012, she was found dead at her residence. Initially, the death was claimed to be due to illness, and the body was hurriedly buried.
Later, the victim’s mother filed a case, which was initially not recorded by police. Following a court order, the body was exhumed and a post-mortem confirmed she had been beaten and strangled to death.
The Criminal Investigation Department (CID) later submitted a charge sheet under Section 11(k) of the Women and Children Repression Prevention Act, 2000. Eleven witnesses testified during the trial.
After the verdict, the court ordered the convict to be sent to jail with a warrant.
