Husband shot housewife in Darus Salam, says RAB

Rapid Action Battalion (RAB) has arrested Abdul Mannan alias Abdul Hannan, the husband of housewife Jesmin Begum, for shooting her at their own house in Darus Salam of the capital. The organization is saying that the claim of miscreants firing from outside has not been found true in the investigation. Mannan himself shot his wife after becoming excited at one stage of a family quarrel.

Jesmin, 38, was shot in the right hand at her own house in Matbarbari Mosque Goli area on Saturday night. After the incident she was admitted to Dhaka Medical College Hospital. RAB has informed that she is currently out of danger.

At a press conference at RAB’s Media Centre in Karwan Bazar of Dhaka on Sunday afternoon, Commanding Officer of RAB-4 Lieutenant Colonel Md. Hafizur Rahman said they have learnt in the investigation that Jesmin was shot by her husband himself. He fired at one stage after becoming excited during a quarrel with his wife.

RAB informed that Abdul Mannan was arrested around 3:30am a few hours after the shooting. Later according to the information given by him, the weapon was handed over to his son Rakib. Rakib hid it at the house of his friend Hatim Mia. Later Mannan and his son Rakib were arrested in a joint operation of RAB-4 and Darus Salam police station. The weapon was recovered by conducting an operation at Hatim’s house on the basis of the information given by Rakib.

A pistol, a magazine and two rounds of bullets have been recovered in the operation. Besides, RAB has also informed about recovering 215 yaba from Mannan.

The commanding officer of RAB-4 said Mannan used to remain drug-addicted most of the time. On the night of the incident also he returned home in a drunken condition. A quarrel took place with his wife over this. At one stage when he fired, it hit the right arm of Jesmin.

Claiming Mannan as a ‘notorious drug trader’ of the area, the RAB officer said they have information of him carrying out terrorist activities using weapons. There are three cases against him at various police stations.

After the incident, it was claimed from the family’s side that Jesmin was watching television keeping the window open. At that time miscreants fired through the window from outside and fled. However, RAB is saying that the incident took place inside the room itself in the investigation. The organisation is assuming that the story of miscreants firing through the window was created to save themselves.

RAB has further informed that they have not found any information of Jesmin’s drug involvement. Rather information has been received from the surrounding people that quarrels and disputes used to take place frequently in their household centering on Mannan’s drug business and drug addiction.

Meanwhile, the commanding officer of RAB-4 also spoke about the beating to death of Sub-Inspector of SB of police Altaf Hossain at Aminbazar in the press conference. He said they have initially learnt that Altaf died in the attack of several persons who were in a drug-addicted condition. When Altaf went to resolve the matter while their quarrel with the driver of an autorickshaw was ongoing, he was attacked. At one stage he died due to being hit with sticks from the surroundings.

Informing that the main accused has been arrested by police in this incident, he said operations are ongoing to arrest the others. Police informed that Altaf and his son became victims of attack when they went to resolve the dispute between two parties over parking a private car in front of a ganji-making factory at Bardeshi Madina Housing area of Aminbazar around 8pm on Saturday. Later the driver and owner of the private car Zahirul Islam was arrested at dawn on Sunday.
