IAB demands immediate cancellation of RAJUK’s DAP
The Institute of Architects Bangladesh (IAB) has urged the government to cancel the Detailed Area Plan (DAP) prepared by the Capital Development Authority (RAJUK), warning that the current plan endangers the future of Dhaka.
At a press conference held on Sunday at the Dhaka Reporters Unity (DRU) auditorium in Segunbagicha, the IAB highlighted numerous legal and technical flaws in the existing DAP and called for a revised, people-friendly plan.
Titled “Anti-People DAP, Discriminatory Planning: Low Citizen Livability and Endangered Environment,” the conference revealed 12 key issues with the DAP 2022-2035, including its failure to ensure sustainable urban development.
Dr. Masud Ur Rashid, General Secretary of IAB, presented the organization’s four-point demand, which includes; immediate cancellation of the current third-phase gazetted DAP and structure plan, preparation of a digital, accessible land-use master plan for RAJUK and Gazipur Development Authority, development of a disaster-resilient, participatory mouza-based DAP updated every five years and formulation of a modern, environmentally sustainable, and inclusive land-use plan for Greater Dhaka and surrounding areas, aligned with Bangladesh’s climate commitments and international agreements.
“We have repeatedly sought dialogue with RAJUK, but have yet to see any response,” said Dr. Rashid. “Today, we stand before you to raise the voices and rights of the people. Our struggle will continue to save Dhaka’s future and protect millions whose livelihoods depend on the construction industry.”
Other notable attendees included IAB President Dr. Abu Saeed M. Ahmed, Vice Presidents Khan Mohammad Mahfuzul Haque and Nawajish Mahbub, and Secretary Wahid Asif.
The Institute called on citizens to unite and act consciously to build a sustainable, just, and prosperous Dhaka.
