Idols at the Kali temple in Swarupdah Palpara, Poradah Union, Mirpur Upazila, Kushtia, were vandalised on Sunday night, sparking fear among the local Hindu community.

Miscreants reportedly broke the heads and hands of the Kartik and Saraswati idols around 9:30pm. Amresh Ghosh, president of the temple committee, said the area was without electricity and lightly raining at the time, which the attackers exploited to carry out the attack and flee unnoticed.

The temple, a temporary structure covered by a tin shed, had recently completed the clay modeling of the idols, with painting scheduled to begin on Monday. The timing of the incident, just days before Durga Puja, has raised concerns among locals.

Mominal Islam, Officer-in-Charge of Mirpur Police Station, confirmed police are conducting preliminary investigations and arrived at the scene promptly after receiving the report.

Sudipto Sarkar, Company Commander of RAB-12 Kushtia Camp, said the Rapid Action Battalion is treating the case seriously and is working to identify and apprehend the culprits.
