Ignoring public aspirations could lead to authoritarian collapse: Info Minister
Information Minister Zahir Uddin Swapan has cautioned that leaders who stray from public expectations risk ending up like past failed authoritarian governments.
He made the remarks as chief guest at the Bangladesh Consulate in Istanbul on Thursday evening (March 26) during the country’s Independence and National Day celebrations.
He began his speech by paying tribute to the martyrs of the Liberation War and reflected on political changes since 2024.
“Particularly, the fall of authoritarian rule on August 5, 2024 offers critical lessons. Those of us elected by the people to lead the state and society must heed these historical insights,” he said.
The minister emphasised that the public’s aspirations should be the core driving force in governance. Decisions taken in disregard of popular sentiment, he warned, could lead to severe consequences.
Swapan arrived in Istanbul Thursday afternoon to participate in the International Strategic Communication Summit (StratCom) 2026 at the invitation of the Turkish government. He is scheduled to return to Bangladesh on March 30 following the summit.
