Inspector General of Police Baharul Alam has announced a tough stance to maintain law and order and social stability ahead of the upcoming national election, warning that attempts to block roads or create unrest will no longer be tolerated.

He made the remarks on Tuesday, December 23, during a day-long dialogue at the Election Building in Agargaon with deputy commissioners, superintendents of police, divisional commissioners, DIGs from all ranges and regional election officers.

The IGP said that police had faced various challenges in maintaining law and order due to circumstances that arose after July. Any attempt to block roads and highways in the name of demands will be dealt with strictly, he said, adding that without law and order, the Election Commission cannot be properly supported.

Reassuring the chief election commissioner and other commissioners, he said the police force is now fully capable of tackling any challenge. He sought uninterrupted cooperation from the Election Commission in taking firm action and said the force is committed to delivering a peaceful and successful election.

He also praised the judicial authority granted to election inquiry committees to curb electoral offences, saying it would help ensure transparency at the field level. He added that the committees are legally empowered to seek assistance from any force when necessary.
