Illegal lead factory raided in Chapainawabganj, 8 sent to jail

A mobile court has sentenced eight individuals to various terms of imprisonment and fines in an operation against a factory illegally producing lead by burning used batteries in Sadar upazila of Chapainawabganj. The factory's electricity connection was also disconnected.

Assistant Commissioner (Land) and Executive Magistrate Ikramul Haque Nahid conducted the operation from 9pm on Tuesday (August 4) to 1:30am on Wednesday in the Sarala Fultala area of Sadar upazila.

He said on Wednesday afternoon that the factory was producing lead by burning old batteries without the necessary approvals, using methods extremely harmful to the environment. This was causing environmental pollution as well as posing serious risks to public health.

The mobile court sentenced the eight individuals arrested during the operation to various terms ranging from one to three months. They were also fined between Tk 10,000 and Tk 1 lakh.

The factory's electricity connection was cut with the assistance of NESCO-1 to prevent it from resuming similar operations.

Two teams from the Sadar Model Police Station took part in the operation to maintain law and order.

Executive Magistrate Ikramul Haque Nahid said the administration's operations against illegal, polluting factories will continue regularly in the future.
