The National Board of Revenue has reduced duty on import of onions, potatoes and pesticides. The tax reductions for potatoes and onion will remain in effect until 30 November, an official release said on Thursday, saying the customs wing issued three separate gazette notifications in this regard. The NBR has waived the 5.0 per cent regulatory duty on onion imports, reduced customs duty from 25 percent to 15 percent for import of potatoes and set a 5.0 percent customs duty on pesticide imports. The decision was taken following requests from the stakeholders and relevant ministries, taking into account the impact of flood and supply chain disruptions caused by the recent student-led mass uprising. ‘Local farmers meet a significant portion of domestic potato and onion demand. Lower import taxes may discourage them from producing these essential crops, that is why the NBR has set a timeline for the tax benefit,’ the statement added.

পেঁয়াজ, আলু ও কীটনাশক আমদানিতে শুল্ক কমিয়েছে জাতীয় রাজস্ব বোর্ড (এনবিআর)। এর মধ্যে আলু ও পেঁয়াজের ওপর শুল্ক কমানোর এই সিদ্ধান্ত আগামী ৩০ নভেম্বর পর্যন্ত কার্যকর থাকবে বলে জানানো হয়েছে। বৃহস্পতিবার এক সরকারি বিজ্ঞপ্তিতে এ তথ্য জানানো হয়। এতে বলা হয়েছে, কাস্টমস উইং থেকে এ সংক্রান্ত পৃথক তিনটি প্রজ্ঞাপন জারি করা হয়েছে। এনবিআর জানিয়েছে, পেঁয়াজ আমদানিতে ৫ শতাংশ রেগুলেটরি ডিউটি মওকুফ, আলু আমদানিতে কাস্টমস ডিউটি ২৫ শতাংশ থেকে কমিয়ে ১৫ শতাংশ এবং কীটনাশক আমদানিতে ৫ শতাংশ শুল্ক নির্ধারণ করা হয়েছে। জানা গেছে, সাম্প্রতিক ছাত্র-জনতার গণঅভ্যুত্থান এবং&nbsp;বন্যার কারণে সরবরাহ চেইন বিঘ্নিত হওয়ায় সংশ্লিষ্ট পক্ষ এবং সংশ্লিষ্ট মন্ত্রণালয়ের অনুরোধের ভিত্তিতে এই সিদ্ধান্ত নেয়া হয়েছে। এ ব্যাপারে এনবিআরের এক বিবৃতিতে আরও বলা হয়েছে, আলু এবং পেঁয়াজের চাহিদার একটি বড় অংশ পূরণ করেন স্থানীয় কৃষকরা। আমদানি শুল্ক কম হলে তা এই প্রয়োজনীয় ফসল উৎপাদনে তাদেরকে নিরুৎসাহিত করতে পারে। এ কারণেই এনবিআর কর কমানোর সুবিধা করে দেয়ার জন্য একটি সময়সীমা নির্ধারণ করেছে।
