Incidents regarding attacks on police have decreased: Home Adviser
Home Affairs Adviser Lt. Gen. (Retd.) Md. Jahangir Alam Chowdhury has said that recent attacks on police have notably declined, while incidents of flash processions and unrest are now largely under control.
Speaking to journalists after handing over 20 new vehicles to the Dhaka Metropolitan Police (DMP) at its headquarters on Wednesday (October 8), he said, “A certain quarter tried to destabilise the country through sudden processions and chaos. But after the arrest of 244 culprits red-handed, such activities have subsided significantly.”
He added that the overall crime rate has also dropped. “If everyone cooperates, such incidents can be completely eliminated. As election campaigns begin, the situation will further normalise,” he noted.
The adviser acknowledged that while an isolated incident occurred recently in Narsingdi, overall conditions are improving steadily.
Commenting on a statement issued by the Police Service Association protesting attacks on police, Jahangir Alam said the public and media awareness has grown, and people now realize that violence against law enforcers harms society.
Regarding law and order during the upcoming election, he said, “The Election Commission bears the main responsibility, but the administration, law enforcement, and political parties must all act responsibly to ensure a peaceful, festive election.”
During the event, the adviser handed over 20 double-cabin pickups to DMP and mentioned that although the force still faces a shortage of vehicles, the government has already approved the purchase of 200 more.
