Increase in allowance for titled freedom fighters proposed

A proposal has been made to increase the monthly allowance of titled freedom fighters in the budget for the 2026-27 fiscal year. However, the government plans to keep the current monthly honorarium of general freedom fighters unchanged at Tk20,000.

Finance Minister Amir Khasru Mahmud Chowdhury made this announcement in the budget speech in the National Parliament on Thursday (June 11).

The speech said that the allowance for the families of titled freedom fighters will be increased by Tk5,000. Accordingly, the new allowance structure may be Tk40,000 for the family of Bir Shrestha, Tk30,000 for Bir Uttam, Tk25,000 for Bir Bikram and Tk25,000 for Bir Pratik.

The budget also says that old age allowance, widow allowance and support for spouse-abused allowance recipients will continue. In addition, it has been proposed to increase the one-time assistance for those suffering from six serious diseases, including cancer, from Tk50,000 to Tk100,000.
