India is closely monitoring potential discussions between Bangladesh and Pakistan over the purchase of JF-17 Thunder fighter jets, citing possible implications for national security.

The position was outlined by Indian Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal during the ministry’s weekly press briefing on Friday, January 9.

Responding to a question about Bangladesh Air Force Chief Hasan Mahmud Khan’s recent visit to Islamabad and reported discussions on fighter aircraft, Jaiswal said India is keeping a close watch on all developments that could have an impact on its national security.

The briefing also addressed the issue of resuming direct flights between Dhaka and Karachi from January 29. Asked whether Bangladesh had sought permission to use Indian airspace for the flights, the spokesperson said such matters would be resolved in line with existing air services agreements.

On the issue of attacks on minorities in Bangladesh, Jaiswal reiterated India’s concern, saying a troubling pattern of repeated attacks on the homes and businesses of minorities by extremist groups has been observed. He stressed the need for swift and strict action in response to such incidents.

He added that attempts to portray such violence as the result of personal enmity or political rivalry are worrying, as they encourage perpetrators and deepen fear and insecurity among minority communities.

Replying to a question on national elections in Bangladesh and Myanmar, Jaiswal said India has consistently supported participatory and inclusive elections.

He said India would continue to call for inclusive electoral processes to ensure a credible public mandate.
