India needs to address Bangladesh’s concerns: Adviser Touhid
India needs to address Bangladesh's concerns, and it could help improve relations between the neighbours, Foreign Adviser Touhid Hossain said on Saturday.
"Bangladesh's previous government addressed the concerns of India, but India did not address Bangladesh's concerns," he said.
Touhid was addressing a roundtable on India-Bangladesh relationship jointly organised by the South Asian Institute of Policy and Governance and North South University's political science and sociology department today.
He said there was no progress on Teesta water sharing or border killing. Such killings don't happen in any other country unless there is a war.
"India has to fix it. If anyone commits crimes, they can be tried in court. Why should they be killed?" Touhid Hossain said.
He said aggressive Indian media campaign against Bangladesh since August 5 is not good for a normal relationship between Bangladesh and India, he added.
"Our media has a role to play, especially in fact-checking and bringing up the facts as well as proper coverage of the foreign ministry statements," he said.
He emphasised on a national consensus on foreign policy, saying that Bangladesh had gained much less than what it could have due to political relations.
At the same time, Bangladesh also needs to improve the national capacity, for example, develop human resources of the country, he said.
"Bangladeshis working in the Middle East are paid much less than that of the other countries just because of the lack of adequate skills and English communication ability," he added.
