India remembers Ziaur Rahman on 45th death anniversary
The Indian High Commission in Dhaka has paid tribute to former President and Bir Uttam Ziaur Rahman on the occasion of his 45th death anniversary, recalling his historic role during Bangladesh’s Liberation War and reaffirming India’s enduring partnership with the Bangladeshi people.
In a message issued its verified facebook page on Saturday (May 30), the High Commission remembered Ziaur Rahman as one of Bangladesh’s distinguished national figures and highlighted his iconic radio broadcast in March 1971, which inspired resistance against oppression and energised the struggle for national liberation.
“As the people of Bangladesh gather today to remember one of the nation’s finest sons, Shaheed President Ziaur Rahman, Bir Uttam, we recall the famous radio message delivered in his voice in March 1971,” the statement said.
The message noted that the broadcast encouraged people to stand against repression and strengthened the resolve of those fighting for Bangladesh’s independence.
The Indian mission also emphasised the shared history and sacrifices of the people of Bangladesh and India during the Liberation War, describing the relationship between the two countries as one built on common struggles and mutual aspirations.
“Just as in 1971, India stands shoulder to shoulder with the people of Bangladesh, bound by a proud legacy of shared sacrifice and a common journey toward progress and prosperity,” the statement added.
The tribute came as Bangladesh observed the 45th martyrdom anniversary of Ziaur Rahman through various programmes, including wreath-laying ceremonies, prayers and discussions highlighting his contributions to the country's independence and political history.
Ziaur Rahman, a sector commander during the Liberation War and later President of Bangladesh, was assassinated on May 30, 1981, in Chattogram. His martyrdom anniversary is observed annually by the Bangladesh Nationalist Party (BNP) and its affiliated organisations.
