Indian national carrying diamonds worth over Tk 6.6cr detained in Jashore
The Border Guard Bangladesh (BGB), today (April 2), detained an Indian national carrying a large cache of diamonds and foreign currency, valued at approximately Tk 6.62 crore.
The suspect, Suja Uddin, 52, son of Abu Bakr from India's Tamil Nadu, was detained this morning near Notunhat Bazar in Jashore Sadar while traveling on a bus to Benapole. Approximately 155.76 grams of diamonds and a small amount of foreign currency were recovered from him.
Experts have verified the authenticity of the diamonds.
In preliminary questioning, Suja Uddin admitted that he collected the diamonds in Dhaka and intended to smuggle them to Kolkata via the Benapole border.
BGB officials noted that in the past month, he had traveled multiple times between Thailand, Malaysia, Bangladesh, and India.
The market value of the seized diamonds is estimated at Tk 6,61,39,510 with foreign currency worth Tk 5,530.
A case is being filed at Jashore Kotwali Model Police Station, and the recovered items will be deposited in the Jashore treasury as per regulations, according to the BGB.
