Former Indian Railways Minister and BJP leader Dinesh Trivedi will arrive in Dhaka in mid-June to take charge as India's new High Commissioner to Bangladesh. On the other hand, Prannoy Verma, who has been serving in the Indian mission in Bangladesh since September 2022, will leave Dhaka soon.

Sources say that outgoing High Commissioner Prannoy Verma has already been appointed as India's Ambassador to Belgium. He will be replaced by veteran Indian politician Dinesh Trivedi. He will arrive in Dhaka in mid-June and take charge. New Delhi officially appointed Dinesh Trivedi as India's new High Commissioner to Bangladesh in late April.

After a long time, the Indian government is sending a politician as High Commissioner to Bangladesh. 75-year-old Dinesh Trivedi is a former Railway Minister in the Union Government of India. He served as the Trinamool Congress representative in Manmohan Singh's cabinet. He was forced to resign under party pressure after proposing a passenger fare hike in the railway budget in 2012.

According to analysts, New Delhi has decided to send an experienced politician to Dhaka as High Commissioner at a crucial time in Bangladesh-India relations. After the fall of Sheikh Hasina's government in August 2024, relations between the two countries cooled somewhat during the interim government led by Professor Muhammad Yunus. Later, after the BNP government took office, it took steps to revive relations between Dhaka and Delhi. In such a context, Dinesh Trivedi's appointment is being seen as significant.

Apart from this, he has also served as the Minister of State for Health and Family Welfare in India. Dinesh Trivedi was a member of both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha. He served as a Lok Sabha member from West Bengal and a Rajya Sabha member from Gujarat. In February 2021, he resigned from the Trinamool Congress and joined the BJP the following month.
